Stainless vs Zinc Plated Fasteners: Corrosion Guide

Stainless steel and zinc plating protect fasteners in different ways. Learn which finish survives weather, salt, and moisture so you can choose the right bolt the first time.

Quick answer

Choose 18-8 stainless steel for outdoor, coastal, or wash-down environments because its corrosion resistance is inherent throughout the metal. Choose zinc plated fasteners for dry, indoor assemblies where you need higher strength at a lower cost and can accept a sacrificial coating.

How stainless steel and zinc plating resist corrosion differently

Stainless steel relies on chromium in the alloy to form a passive oxide layer that self-repairs when scratched, so it resists rust even if the surface is damaged. Zinc plating works the opposite way: the zinc coating sacrifices itself to protect the steel underneath, which means once the plating is scratched through or consumed, the base metal starts to rust. That difference explains why a zinc plated bolt can look fine for years indoors and then fail quickly in a wet or salty environment.

When zinc plated bolts are the right call

Zinc plated fasteners shine in dry, climate-controlled settings such as furniture, indoor machinery, and automotive interiors. They also cost less than stainless and are available in higher strength grades, so they make sense when you need a strong, tight joint and moisture is not a factor. If you are assembling something that will never see rain, salt spray, or repeated washing, zinc plating is a practical, budget-friendly choice.

When to step up to 18-8 stainless

18-8 stainless steel (also called A2) is the go-to for outdoor projects, marine areas, food equipment, and any spot that stays damp. It handles fresh water and mild chemicals well, though it is not ideal for prolonged saltwater immersion or high-chloride environments. Stainless is generally softer than alloy steel, so avoid using it where high torque or extreme shear strength is the priority.

What about alloy steel with black oxide?

Black oxide is a conversion coating that darkens the steel and offers mild corrosion resistance, often improved with a light oil film. It is not a substitute for zinc plating or stainless in wet conditions. Alloy steel black oxide fasteners are best for indoor machinery, tooling, and precision assemblies where strength and a low-profile finish matter more than weather resistance. They can rust if moisture sits on them, so keep them dry or add a protective coating.

Mixing metals and other practical tips

Pairing stainless fasteners with zinc plated or bare steel parts can cause galvanic corrosion in the presence of an electrolyte like salt water. Use isolating washers or choose matching materials when possible. For outdoor use, always orient fasteners so water drains away, and consider a thread lubricant to prevent galling on stainless. If you are unsure about a specific environment, test a small sample before committing to a full assembly.

Corrosion FAQs

Will zinc plated bolts rust outdoors?
Yes, eventually. Zinc plating is a sacrificial coating, so it protects the steel until the zinc is consumed. In rain, humidity, or salt air, that happens faster than indoors. For long-term outdoor use, choose stainless steel instead. Zinc plated is not a long-term outdoor solution.
Is 18-8 stainless good for coastal areas?
18-8 (A2) stainless handles fresh water and mild exposure well, but it can pit in salt-heavy coastal air or direct saltwater spray. For those conditions, consider a higher grade like 316 stainless, which is not covered here. For coastal salt exposure, 18-8 may not be enough.
Can I use stainless fasteners with zinc plated brackets?
You can, but in a wet or salty environment the dissimilar metals can create a galvanic couple that accelerates corrosion of the zinc plated part. Use nylon washers or a barrier sealant to isolate them if the joint will get wet. Isolate dissimilar metals in wet conditions.
